Foundational Drawing
Figure Study in Ink (2023). Done in the span of under 15 minutes, apart of an exercise delving into the practice of mapping out value, with little line informing the foundation of the figure. During my first semester, in my freshman year.
That Horse on my Mother's Wall (2023) A favorite of mine, within my final drawing series for Drawing 1 in my freshman year. For the last month of my drawing class, my professor (Norman Paris), had us do chunks of preparatory series leading up to our conclusive final piece. Exploring the idea of animals, influenced by the technique of Hokusai with his utilization of ink, each drawing gradually got larger and larger. This one is around 15x15, all done in ink during Thanksgiving break. Throughout my childhood, there was a semi-realistic photo of a horse, all done in colored crushed velvet. Inspired by kitsch and nostalgia, I recreated it in ink.
Dogs vs. Cats. Final (Part 1) Ink. 10ftx5ft. The full panel for my drawing final measures at a solid 10 feet. Done on Stonehedge paper, this was my final installment in my Hokusai animal investigation. By layering, and fading in the figures, I wanted to make a commentary on the nature of dog vs. cat. Everyone knows that the two are pitted against each other, but why? The debate on who's more aggressive, and lovable. The masculine and the feminine. Hard and soft.
Dogs vs. Cats. Final (Part 2) Ink 10ftx5ft.
Untitled (2024). Charcoal and pastel chalk. 5ftx5ft. Another one of my drawing finals. Only this time within the second semester. My final stretch of my freshman year, my second to last critique as a foundations student. The prompt simply was to do whatever I want, a refreshing change of pace. During this time I experienced constant fatigue, burnout, a frenzied nature longing to return home. Dreams out in the ether, solitude, eyes closed, focusing on the origin point - home.
