Textiles
My journey with textiles has been recent, but exciting. Beginning at an early age, the concept of DIY, turning material into an item more tangible, poppy, punk, and full of life - had always excited me. From hand sewing to machine, experimenting with materiality, and layering, is a process Iād love to have unfold further.
"What Do You Know About Girls? (Front)" (2023) 7ft x 4ft Repurposed quilt, bedazzled trim, lace, patchwork detailing, ribbon, safety pins, clippings from adult magazines, image transfer on fabric. A commentary on the state on gender, the material both soft and hard. The lace contrasting the more utilitarian pattern surrounding it. The concept came from the idea of a quilt, what goes into, and what can truly transform the idea of one. How can I send a message with such a simple tradition? Partially inspired by the idea of the 'AIDS quilts' in the 80s, the idea of sexuality and the call for action towards a topic at large, informed my process. Growing up as a girl, what comes with sexuality, performativity, and the associations to the binary that surrounds us. Clippings from adult magazines were sewn into the fabric, with erotic images printed onto the lace, transparent material, and more, were used to transform the simplicity of quilts, into something more.
